Education, Literacy & The Arts

Proceeds from our fundraising activities allow us to support a variety of educational activities in our local schools.  These range from supplying kindergarten students a book and suggested learning activities each month to organizing performances and workshops in the arts and providing art lessons.

We are also proud supporters of  literacy programming in six local libraries.

Support for Summer Literacy Programs in Lanark County

In October of 2023, the CFUW Perth and District Education, Literacy and the Arts Committee provided six local libraries with $600 each to support delivery of literacy programs for children in the summer of 2024. Early literacy provides a strong foundation for success in school, and we are pleased to support the creative programming offered to local children in their libraries. Cheques were presented to the Almonte Branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library, the Carleton Place Public Library, the Lanark Highlands Public Library, the Perth and District Union Library, the Rideau Lakes Public Library, and the Smiths Falls Public Library.

Seventeen Grade 3 students from Glen Tay Public School made “Christmas Greens Centrepieces” after amazing work from CFUW members Katharina Allen (who prepared all the greenery), Lesley Todd, Judy Preston & Marg Bartlett.

Look at those proud faces! And we are doing what we do best—enriching children's education. #cfuwperth

"The library could not do what it does without the generous support of a caring community. Thank you again for your thoughtful gift to the library and to the many young readers in the community who rely on us for services and programs.”

Lanark Highlands Public Library literacy

In the spring of 2020, CFUW Perth and District provided $900 to support the Lanark Highlands Public Library literacy initiatives. The Library used the funds to purchase education kits, both for in-school use and for parents to use at home. Materials in the kits include

  • Spectrum Reading and Phonics workbooks (Grades K to 4). These will remain as reference materials and copies of the individual worksheets will be made for in-library and at-home use so that the workbooks themselves remain intact and will be able to be used for years.·

  • Blending Cubes

  • Flash Cards focusing on word recognition, sight words and letter sounds

  • Rhyming Word & Blends Dominoes

  • Roll-A-Word Dice Games

  • Sight Word Readers (Levels A-D)
