Learn about wetlands and preserving biodiversty in Lanark

Updated: Apr 7

Join us on Earth Day, April 22, 2025 to hear Don Johnston, Past President of the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) speak on the importance of wetlands and preserving biodiversity in the region.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 22, 2025, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: The Royal Canadian Legion, 26 Beckwith Street East, Perth or

ZOOM: Register here

An architect who served for six years on the MMLT volunteer board, Don will also talk about the regulatory regime covering the land’s protection and the need to maintain public access to nature.

The MMLT currently has 13 properties, that cover 3600 acres of conversation land, including 3149 acres of trees, 442 acres of wetlands and 74 acres of grasslands.

In 2024, CFUW passed a Resolution on the protection of peatlands, just one form of wetland that is so important to preserve in the fight against climate change.  The CFUW Perth & District Environment Committee invited Don Johnston to speak about these natural areas. We encourage members to take action locally to support their protection. Lanark County and many of its townships are working on protecting these powerhouses that moderate the impacts of climate change by developing Natural Heritage Systems. Local wetlands that many members have likely enjoyed are the Tay Marsh and the beautiful orchids in Purdon Conservation Area. These areas protect wildlife and provide wild areas for all of us to enjoy.

This is a hybrid presentation—free and open to all. Join us in person at the Royal Canadian Legion, 26 Beckwith Street in Perth or on ZOOM. Register here or email us.
