Speaker Program

In 2022-23, CFUW Perth & District met the 3rd Monday of the month, from September to June. These meetings included guest speakers, covering topics that were diverse, current, educational and thought-provoking — plus they were open to the public!

Meetings began at 7 p.m. In person meetings were held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 26 Beckwith Street East, Perth. Meetings were also provided via ZOOM.

Guest Speaker: Jill Skinner, retired Deputy Police Chief, Community Leader

Please join us to hear Jill Skinner share stories from her life and her career in the Ottawa Police Service.  Jill served  for 37 years, retiring as Deputy Chief in 2018. In 2017, she was awarded membership in Canada's Order of Merit of the Police Forces for her exceptional leadership and contributions to policing and community services. Since retiring, she has served on community boards and is currently operating the Ottawa office of Investigative Solutions. (In Person and Zoom) More info here

Please join us for an electrifying evening of learning and discussion about electric vehicles. Are you thinking of buying an EV, but are hesitant? Are there enough chargers in place? Guest Speaker: David Kroetsch, Co-Director of Community Housing Initiative Perth, (CHIP)

Learn about an exciting new geared-to-income housing project in Perth. When built this project will result in a new 12-unit,  3-storey building with four units of handicap accessible housing, four units suitable for families and four units suitable for single residents. Learn about women's challenges acquiring menstrual products and how The Period Purse is fighting for menstruation to be understood and treated with dignity, and for period products to be freely available for all.

A kaleidoscope of views on the role of women, marriage and the family, interpreting Islam, and Islamophobia and tolerance. Stories that break through typical stereotypes.

Guest Speaker: Shehzad K. Ghani, Creating Welcoming Communities in Lanark

Shehzad K. Ghani will explore the various pathways newcomers take in coming to Canada and describe the services offered by the Local Immigration Partnership – Lanark & Renfrew.

 

Hear the settlement experiences of newcomers in our community. 

Ask your immigration questions and take a look at Canada’s Citizenship Test. There are currently close to 4160 newcomers living in Lanark County. (Hybrid meeting) More info here

Guest Speaker: Mary Hawkins, Advice on 'How to Talk to Your Doc' 

Everyone is talking about health care! Join our October general meeting to hear author Mary Hawkins describe how fundamental changes in Canada’s health care system are affecting patient care and explain how to talk about your concerns with your doctor. Hear practical tips and learn from real-life scenarios how to explain your condition, advocate for solutions, speak on behalf of a child, and more.

September 29, 2022

Reconnecting In Person: Reconnect with CFUW members at our 1st monthly meeting of the 2022-23 year. It's an appetizer potluck, as we greet old friends and welcome new. Sign up for Interest Groups—there are new ones to consider. All of our advocacy groups are planning great years. Marg White will present a short history of the Club and Marlene Starkman will take you through the new Club website. Of course, there will be business to discuss as well.
