A Scarf that Tells a Story: Creativity, Advocacy, and CFUW Pride

The new CFUW Ontario Council scarf is more than just a beautiful accessory—it is a symbol of creativity, leadership, and the shared commitment to education and advocacy.

Designed by CFUW Perth & District member and Communications Co-Chair, Alanna Scanlon, the scarf blends artistic expression with meaningful symbolism that reflects the spirit of CFUW.
Measuring 70” x 16”, this elegant scarf is 100% polyester with a soft, semi-transparent texture that feels like chiffon with a satin weave. Lightweight and flowing, it drapes beautifully and can be worn in many styles.
The Inspiration Behind the Design
The creative journey began when Alanna was asked by Marlene Starkman, Regional Director for Ontario East, to design a one-of-a-kind scarf for CFUW Ontario Council in support of its upcoming 2026 AGM . The request was both exciting and a little daunting, Alanna says.
“I was very excited when Marlene asked me if I would like to design a scarf for CFUW OC. I wasn’t sure where to begin, so I started with the colours of the logo and my first design mirrored the logo.”
As the concept evolved, Marlene encouraged Alanna to explore something more artistic and shared inspiration from one of her favourite scarves purchased in Spain. That conversation sparked a new direction. “This is when loose swirls and slashes of logo colours came into play.” Alanna created about eight different designs, working through ideas and seeking feedback from her sisters-in-law and other women. Together, they gradually narrowed the options down to two final designs.
“I was very pleased with the response of the Ontario Council board to the scarf designs, and while I liked both options, I am very happy with the final choice of the more modern, artistic design.”

Symbolism Woven Into the Design
The scarf’s bold visual elements are not only artistic—they carry deeper meaning connected to the mission and values of CFUW.
Bold Circles
Represent unity, global thinking, and influence
Reflect the expanding impact of educated women
Brush Strokes
Symbolize creativity, innovation, and forward movement
Express the energy of advocacy and social change
Trillium Outline
- A subtle nod to Ontario identity
- Keeps the design modern while honouring our roots
The Meaning Behind the Colours
Each colour in the scarf echoes the values and purpose of CFUW:
Deep Blue: intellectual depth
Orange: activism and leadership
Yellow/Gold: achievement and opportunity
White: clarity and inclusiveness
Together, the design communicates creativity, energy, and evolving leadership—qualities that define CFUW members across Ontario.
Tradition Meets Innovation
The two original scarf concepts represented different creative directions, yet together they reflected the balance within CFUW itself: tradition and innovation. They celebrate our shared commitment to education, advocacy, and empowering women while also highlighting the creative voices within our membership.
Wearing the Message
For Alanna, seeing members wear the scarf is especially meaningful.
“It is exciting to think that people will be wearing my artwork. I do hope the symbolism behind it speaks to members and inspires them to not only purchase and wear one at meetings, but also to wear it elsewhere—thereby promoting CFUW and our mandate of education, social justice, and women’s rights.”
This scarf is more than an accessory—it is a visible symbol of the values that unite CFUW members. Whether worn at conferences, club meetings, or in everyday life, it proudly represents the organization’s dedication to education, advocacy, and the advancement of women.
At $25, the CFUW Ontario Council scarf offers members a beautiful and meaningful way to
share that message with the world.
